The Traveler's Check from Surly is a split frame bike that is designed to be broken into two halves for ease of transportation and/or storage. This bike could be a traveler's dream. With some disassembling the bike will easily load into a small case for air travel or for those with small apartments it can be shoved into a closet.
The Traveler's Check is based on Surly's Cross Check frame, a versatile on or off road bike that can accommodate skinny tires or fat. The frame utilizes S&S couplers; each tube end fits into the other via precision-machined teeth that are covered by a threaded sleeve. When lubed and tightened the teeth resist the torque pressure while the sleeves hold the two halves of the frame together securely. The S&S coupler system helps the frame retain its ride quality yet does not add much weight.
If your idea of travel is to throw your bike on the plane and see new areas on two wheels, if you have a small vehicle that does not fit a bike or if the only storage available in your resident is a closet then this may just be the frame for you.
