(Airdrie, AB - September 4, 2010) The dust has fallen, the riders have gone home, but the memories of the 2010 BMX Nationals held in Airdrie, AB, will remain forever.
Over two days of extreme BMX riding, a total of 520 BMX riders from all over canada merged into Airdrie, just north of Calgary, to compete for Canada's top honour in the newest Olympic cycling discipline.
In the Elite category, Sam Cools (Elite Women) and James Brown (Elite Men) went on to win the Canadian Championship event, grabbing hold of the infamous Red and White jersey awarded to the National Champions.
Cools, a five-time World Junior Champion, is the only women rider to have represented Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, when the sport was introduced in the Olympic programme.
"Airdrie put on a great event and we had a great turnout of more than 520 entries for the weekend, including the biggest ever field in the Championship class with over 50 athletes," said Adam Muys, the BMX Head Coach at the Canadian Cycling Association.
Tory Nyhaug, the young sensation in BMX riding, did not participate as he is recovering from an injury suffered at the World Championships. Nyhaug was the defending Champion in the Men's category.
In the Junior category, Sabrina Millman and Connor McCormack took home the gold medal. Both Millman and McCormack attended the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships in South Africa earlier this summer.
